On Tuesday, Steinbach City Council approved a conditional use request paving the way for a new Freightliner Dealership to be set up on the north side of the city.

The property in question is unit 13, 40 Northgate Drive near Crossings Funeral Care.

The new dealership would be set up in full view of Highway 12Bob Schinkel appeared before council at Tuesday's public hearing representing the owner of the property.

"I think it is a great opportunity for the city. It is going to be a state-of-the-art building and it is going to be right at the entrance of Steinbach, I think it is going to be a very pretty building that we will all be proud of. The most important thing is that it will create jobs. They will be well-paying jobs, skilled labour, and they will be full-time jobs."

With Trucks Unlimited, Enns Brothers, Big Freight, and Steinbach Truck Services all nearby, Schinkel says Freightliner will fit the area well.

Waldo Neustaedter also presented to council speaking on behalf of the purchaser.

"They want to build a dealership, service, and parts facility in Steinbach and they are excited to come here. They have shown us their plans for the first portion of the building is going to be over 20,000 square feet and so they really want to commit to Steinbach as they have committed to Manitoba."

Council was unanimous in approving the conditional use permit required.
