The U.S. National Weather Service has released its first flood forecast of the season for the Red River Valley. According to the Spring 2022 Flood Outlook, all Red River main-stem points on the U.S. side of the border may see near to somewhat above normal spring runoff and flows.

Lingering 2021 drought conditions mean surface storage has room for snowmelt infiltration if the thaw is gentle.

Frost depths are running near to somewhat deeper than long-term normal, due to cold January conditions.

Snowfall and snowfall water equivalent through late January is near to above long-term mid-winter normal amounts.

Forecasters note soil moisture is back to within an inch plus-or minus of normal levels in the U.S. side of the basin.

Climate outlooks currently indicate near normal temperatures and precipitation through the late winter and early spring periods, which would help keep overall risk in check.

The next U.S. flood update will be released February10th.
