Steinbach city council has made a decision on the names of roads in the newly-annexed areas of the city. Mayor Chris Goertzen says, for the most part, the names of existing city streets will be used.

"Most of them extend from the city, whether it's Mckenzie Road or whether it's Park Road or Clear Springs Road. Many of them extend from the city and so those names will be extended into the new areas of the city."

This also includes Keating Road, Bush Farm Road, Hanover Road and Hirschfeld Road. There are three exceptions to this plan. Road 32 E on the west edge of the city will revert back to its former name which is Twin Creek Road. And there are two isolated pieces of road along the city's lagoon where there are no residences which will keep their numbered designations.

The city had asked for input on street names from residents of the new parts of the city but received no responses. Goertzen says the city will now draft a bylaw with these changes and hopes to have it approved in a few months.

"Council will obviously have to create a bylaw for this. Canada Post does want to act on the new names fairly quickly and so, within the next few months we expect to have this in front of council and approved."

Canada Post has announced the newly-annexed areas of the city will be getting community mailboxes and asked the city to decide on street names as soon as possible so that affected residents would only have to change their mailing address one time.
