The Reeve of Hanover says the municipality would encourage farmers to trap for moles.

Stan Toews says he does not know if it has been a worse year for the mammals, however, he has heard from at least one farmer requesting the municipality endorse the trapping.

"He's requesting that people start trapping their moles," says Toews. "Because he's apparently quite active trapping his but if neighbours don't trap them, you all know moles keep moving around."

Toews says the moles can do a lot of damage. He notes they make large dirt piles on the field. Then, if the farmer does not notice those piles in time, they can break equipment when driven over.

According to Toews, some farmers are trapping up to 50 moles per week. Yet, if only one or two farmers are trapping, you can never get a handle on the situation.

"They will keep coming in from neighbouring fields if his feed supply looks better than where they came from," suggests Toews.

According to Toews, Hanover does not have any bylaws and does not reward trapping, but he notes if everybody does their part, they can get the situation under control.
