A spokesperson for Manitoba Provincial Parks says campsite bookings are looking pretty good for the May long weekend.

Elisabeth Ostrop is Manager of Recreation and Education Services. She says they are on track to equal last year's totals. Ostrop notes there are still plenty of campsites available for this weekend, though full service sites may be more difficult to find.

According to Ostrop, about half the province's campgrounds opened for the season last weekend, with the remaining expected to open this weekend.

After years of May long weekend being liquor-free, Ostrop says they decided to try a pilot project last year and allow it.

"There were essentially no major incidents," reports Ostrop. "So therefore we decided not to reinstate the liquor ban this year in our provincial parks."

She notes as long as people drink responsibly and are not rowdy, they may extend this into future years.

Parks Canada has a different policy and Ostrop says Riding Mountain National Park has a liquor ban in place for this weekend.

Ostrop reminds campers that cannabis is prohibited in campgrounds of provincial parks.

Meanwhile, she says it does not appear there are any campfire restrictions in place for provincial parks at the moment. However, she notes this could change, depending on the weather. Ostrop suggests checking the wildfire program website for the most current restrictions. Fires are only allowed in approved pits and must never be left unattended.
