Maple Leaf Foods says it is buying Puratone of Niverville for $42 million dollars.

President and Chief Executive Officer Michael McCain says the acquisition will ensure a consistent supply of hogs to its processing facility in Brandon. He adds Maple Leaf looks forward to welcoming Puratone employees and benefitting from their experience and commitment to best practices.

Puratone produces about 500 thousand hogs per year. It has been under creditor protection since September after struggling with high grain prices brought on by the drought in the U.S.
