RCMP placed Shevchenko School in Vita under lockdown Friday evening after threats of violence were made toward the school.

Shortly before 8 P.M., Emerson RCMP received a report that a former student had posted the threats of violence on social media. Officers immediately responded and placed the school, which was hosting a basketball game at the time, under lockdown.

Police say officers then followed up on several tips over the next two hours and with the help of police dog services were able to locate the suspect and a weapon at approximately 10 P.M.

The suspect is a 19-year-old male from the RM of Stuartburn. The man was arrested and is facing charges of Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon when knowing Possession Unauthorized, and Uttering Threats.

The suspected has been remanded in custody and RCMP say the investigation is ongoing.
