It is International Women’s Day today, and Steinbach Online recognizes the many women who have helped move our local community forward.

Jo-Anne Dalton has spent the past year in her new role of Executive Director at the Steinbach Family Resource Centre.

“I wouldn’t be here without other strong women believing me and inspiring me to go after my goals,” says Dalton “and now I have the privilege to encourage other women to chase their dreams. It's an honor to be able to give back in that way.”

Steinbach Councillor Susan Penner acknowledges this importance of women supporting one another.

“As only the third women to be elected into Steinbach City Council, I’m proud to have a voice in public office that women haven’t always had in our community,” Penner comments, “I hope I’m showing that women can have effective input around the council table.”

Hanover School Division Assistant Superintendent Shelley Amos says she too believes in the importance of women in leadership.

“As a woman, I believe my role in leading is to come alongside others, to build their capacity, and encourage them to be their best self so that they may also lead.”

Dr. Lori Petrelli of Loewen Chiropractic Clinic adds that women, like herself, also have the responsibility of being positive examples.

“I think that the impact I make, as a woman in my position, is a model: an example of what being a successful, happy, and healthy woman can be.”

Bev Penner is the entrepreneur who began Prairie Oils and Vinegar several years ago. She urges her fellow women to push themselves.

“I took a concept that nobody in this area knew anything about, opened the first oil and vinegar tasting room in Manitoba, and made it a successful business. If you believe in something and are passionate about it, don’t be afraid to try something new.”

Oakridge Greenhouse Manager Megan Fontaine echoes Penner: “My personal gifts and abilities have transformed and evolved over the years, but everything I do is for the women and for the community, and I hope that comes across.”

Cindy Rempel Patrick, the Chief Creative Officer of the Steinbach Arts Council indicates that local women are one of the main reasons local arts are flourishing.

“I feel very fortunate to be involved in an organization that works with a lot of women artists, administrators, and volunteers. They’re all so creative, and when we have a creative community, we have a healthy community.”

Meanwhile, Agape House Director Tracy Whitby remarks: “To empower and inspire: I think that’s the whole goal of International Women’s Day. Through all of the events we host and hold, that’s our constant objective.”

International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8th in an ongoing effort to make a positive difference for women. These Steinbach women, along with countless others, ensure the continued growth and thriving of the community through their notable efforts.
