Corporal Barry Penner when he was on patrol in Afghanistan

Steinbach war veteran Barry Penner is urging all of us to take time Friday to remember those who have fought in various wars to protect our freedom.

Corporal Penner served with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Afghanistan. He says, "It's important to remember all the conflicts, Korea and the First And Second World Wars. I guess, selfishly, I remember mostly the people that I knew."

He adds his war experience is not something he dwells on all the time, but memories pop up on a regular basis. "I don't want to say it's all the time and make it sound like it's something that I dwell on and haven't dealt with. But it's a snapshot in your mind, if you want, a clip that's always vibrant," said Penner. He spends more time reflecting on his fallen comrades on Remembrance Day but those thoughts are also present at other times throughout the year.

The Remembrance Day service in Steinbach will take place at Steinbach Junior High School starting at 10:30a-m.
