For many reasons, one would think this to be another tough year for our local farming families. Not so, says part-owner of Herbsigwill Farms, Korey Peters.

“It's been pretty good. We got a nice early start and then had a little snow delay and a rain delay, but overall, the moisture that we've received this spring has been nice to help create some pretty good seeding conditions” says Peters.

While some farmers put seed in the ground before the snowfall in March, Herbsigwill Farms took that month to prepare the land, then waited for the snow to melt and began seeding by the end of April.

“The fields are really nice,” says Peters. “The 4 millimetres of rain we had two days ago was nice too. Just to add a little bit of moisture to the soil, so it’s really nice conditions right now for seeding. We’re very happy. We just hope for a good run of nice weather. So that we can continue to get a lot of crops in the ground in the next couple of weeks”.

When asked about the soil moisture content, Peters says, 'for seeding it’s ok right now', but mentions that the water table itself is pretty low. Farmers in the southeast will need more moisture throughout the year to replenish the water table, so the roots have access to more water later on in the season.
