The shop fire took place near the red dotLightning strikes caused more than one fire in the Dominion City area early Saturday morning.

Dominion City Fire Chief Barry Gushuliak says they attended a shop fire just northwest of the community of Roseau River around 6:00 A.M.

“There was a 30 by 40 foot garage type structure. He had a boat in there and compressors, tools and it was totally involved in fire. It was actually collapsing already by the time we got there. Emerson and us and we called in St. Malo's tanker for extra water and we put water on it until it was out.”

Gushuliak says they believe the cause of the fire was a lightning strike as the owner of the property says the whole yard was affected.

“When I looked, the power line was just about blasted off the pole, he said that the trees burnt in the yard and you know when you have metal siding and you have screw with the washer on it, all those were burned off the building.”

Gushuliak says he estimates the shop fire resulted in somewhere between $150,000 and $200,000 in damage once you take what was inside into account.

In addition to the shop fire, Gushliak says they were called to a fire in a swamp even earlier in the morning around 1:00 A.M. Saturday approximately 8 miles east of Dominion City. He adds they believe that fire was also started by lightning.
