La Broquerie Firefighters prevented what could have been a devastating house fire on Sunday.

At around 8 PM, Fire Chief Alain Nadeau and his crews were called to a property just east of La Broquerie. There they found chicken coop fire beginning to spread to a nearby garage. Nadeau gives his analysis of the situation.

“The homeowners burnt a little bit of paper in their garbage barrel in the morning and then left for the day. I think what happened is something flew out of the barrel and lit a firewood pile leaning against a chicken coop. The wood, lit the coop which lit the garage which lit a nearby camper trailer also.”

Left unattended for much longer, Nadeau says the fire could have easily consumed the garage and the nearby trailer and begun to destroy the house as well. However, thanks to the actions of his department, all three remain salvageable; the home completely unscathed.

The chicken coop was a total loss, he concedes, but no animals were harmed by the blaze.

Altogether, Nadeau estimates the fire caused about $20,000 in property damage.
