Manitoba Hydro is making progress on restoring power to areas of southeastern Manitoba.

The widespread outage started at approximately 3:40 am, impacting about 5,400 customers in Steinbach, Ste. Anne, Richer, Blumenort, Mitchell and Lorette.

Spokesperson Bruce Owen says a downed sub-transmission line near Ste. Anne caused the outage. That line feeds to a number of sub-stations in the area. Owen says a combination of wind and ice caused the line to come down.

As of 9 am, the majority of customers had their power restored.

The remaining customers, about 550 of them, are expected to have their power back on by approximately 10:30 am.
