The drainage system in St. Pierre is working a lot better than it has in the past.

Mayor Raymond Maynard says a section of Highway 59 was always flooding during any rainfall event.

stem handled that water as quickly as they had hoped it would.

“Not a stitch of water, it didn’t flood at all,” he says. “So, our drainage system is definitely doing what we wanted it to do, and we're not even done. There's still more phases to do to that drainage. So, if this is any indication, it was definitely the right thing to do.”

The project included the replacement of drainage pipes under Highway 59.

“We’ve gone down Joubert and beside the museum and all the way down to behind the museum, down to (the manor.) And from there it goes to lift stations. And just by doing that, from what I can see, it alleviated our problems.”

Maynard says the flooding situation used to be significant enough that traffic had to go around that section of Highway 59 in the middle of the village.

“We were detouring semis, highway tractors with big loads. So going on our side streets, which isn't good for our side streets and it's quite the negotiating turn that they have to do to turn down a side street to come back to Hwy 59. So the least amount of times we have to do that the better it is for everybody.”
