The SRSS will be offering counseling to any students who suffered trauma during today’s lockdown.

The school was put under lockdown at 2:40 this afternoon after what sounded like gunshots was heard near the school property. RCMP arrived on the scene almost immediately and within 15 minutes had determined that everything was safe and under control.

“We’re greatly relieved that it is not serious as it could have been,” comments Superintendent Randy Dueck, “but having said that there were a lot of students who were shaken and rattled by it.”

He continues, “When the RCMP came on site they came in full gear with weapons at the ready. It's great to know that they’re responsive, but for kids who see that... it’s a little disconcerting, to say the least.”

Dueck acknowledges that some students may have been disturbed by today’s events and says counseling will be provided for any student or staff member who may have suffered trauma during this incident. He indicates that school guidance counsellors and social workers are prepared to stay at the school as long as they are needed to ensure everyone is able to cope with the experience.

“It was certainly an uncomfortable situation for everybody,” states Dueck, “but thankfully there were no shots fired and everybody is going to be okay.”

Meanwhile, Dueck adds that the Hanover School Division will be sending out a message instructing parents how to approach this topic with their kids over the weekend.
