A couple from the LaBroquerie area might've lost their house if their kids hadn't checked it for them while they're away.

Just after five o'clock Thursday evening, the LaBroquerie Fire Department was called to Kokomo Drive for a fire from an unknown source. Fire Chief Alain Nadeau says it turned out to be good timing when the kids came to check on the house.

"The people were gone on holidays and it's the kids checking the house. They got to the house and it was really smoked, they smelled an electrical fire so they shut the doors and called us right away. We went in and we found that the furnace had fried, it's an electrical furnace that completely fried."

Nadeau notes they did the right thing by getting out, shutting all the doors and immediately calling 911. He urges anyone planning to go away, to have someone check your house.

"Oh yeah, when you get people checking your house on holidays that's always a good thing. Have somebody check your house daily. This is perfect case scenario otherwise a few more days, the house would've frozen up."

Nadeau adds the smoke in the house was quite thick so there's a good chance there will be some significant smoke damage. He noes there were no injuries.
