A house went up in flames early Thursday morning in Steinbach.

The Steinbach Fire Department was called to Oak Crescent at about 1:30 am.

"When we arrived, there was fire coming out of the front windows, out of the back windows, it was fully involved," says Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews. "A detached garage had already ignited. So it was well involved by the time we got there."

Toews says it immediately became a defensive attack.

"There was a property to the left that some vinyl siding was melted, and so it came close there to igniting and spreading to that structure," adds Toews.

According to Toews, the fire was declared out at about 2:30 am. But, he says the home is a total loss and he is not sure if any of its contents were salvaged. It is an older home and Toews provides a damage estimate of at least $250,000.

Firefighters were on scene until about 8 am. The Office of the Fire Commissioner is currently investigating what caused the blaze.

Toews notes there was at least one resident at home at the time of the fire. He says there were no injuries.
