Though cannabis is legal today, Hanover School Superintendent Randy Dueck, suggests that not a lot will change for the school division.

“We are not changing our substance use and abuse policy at all,” comments Dueck, “Cannabis has not been okay on our school grounds and will not be okay.”

Despite the recent legislation, Dueck explains that school policies regarding pot have stayed largely the same: all inebriating substances in all forms will continue to be prohibited from all school properties in Hanover.

Dueck adds that information has been sent out to all staff within the division explaining the specifics of this no-tolerance policy: “We are prohibiting smoking, vaping, and consumption of cannabis while on duty, as well as possessing, using, or smelling of cannabis in the workplace or school environment.” A student caught with the drug will suffer a five-day suspension for their first offense and any employee caught with marijuana will be disciplined accordingly.

Dueck feels the division has already done a great job of informing students on the various dangers associated with the drug. “We feel it is really important that students understand the facts,” says Dueck who mentions that addictions counseling will continue to be available and encouraged for both teachers and students who would benefit from their services.

“Cannabis and developing young minds don’t go together very well. And if you, as a student, want to give yourself every chance you can, cannabis might not be the best way to go,” concludes Dueck.
