Two families from Mitchell are getting new homes thanks to the Southeast Chapter of Habitat For Humanity.

The duplex will go up at the corner of Oakview Avenue and Elm Street. This build was announced more than two and a half years ago and spokesperson Sheri Bueckert says it is both exciting and a relief to be at this point.

Bueckert says John Dyck with his two children will move into one side, while Norman and Ricarda Niessen, with their four children will own the other side.

"Both families are currently right now residing in Mitchell," says Bueckert. "A huge positive aspect to this is that the children will not need to change schools."

Bueckert says a lot of criteria needs to be met for families to be approved for a Habitat For Humanity home. She notes in this case, it took a little bit longer for the families to sort out their finances.

"We are incredibly blessed and excited to be able to announce, not only that we got one family but that we actually got two," says Bueckert.

Now that the Family Selection Committee has finalized which families will be living there, Bueckert says the Construction Committee will take over. She notes they hope to break ground near the end of July. It is then usually a 12 to 18 month build. That is because families are expected to put in 500 hours of sweat equity.

According to Bueckert, the lot is pretty much good to go. She notes they may need to remove one or two trees, depending on which way the driveways fit in.

Meanwhile, Bueckert says the Southeast Chapter is already looking at potential locations for the next build. She says they like to target different areas of the southeast but also work very closely with Habitat For Humanity Manitoba.
