Fire crews look for smoke following fire

Steinbach fire crews made short work of a fire just south of Blumenort along Highway #12 Friday afternoon.  Deputy Fire Chief Don Smith says they were called to the grass fire along a road allowance.  "A farmer had lit some bulrushes on fire and it kind of got away on him.  We arrived and it was burning.  There were no buildings in danger but he was a little bit worried so we brought our tanker up and we put it out and it caused no damage."

Smith adds a word of caution.  "It's extremely dry and during the day when it's extremely hot, fire can get away from you.  People need to be concerned and pay attention to the wind direction and how hard it is blowing before they consider burning.  A better time is evening because the dewpoint comes down and generally the wind quiets down at that point too and there is less chance of things getting away from you."

The bulrushes were destroyed.
