Go-karts, chicken dinner and BMX: What's happening this weekend

The second weekend of July is a busy one for many communities in the southeast. If you need weekend plans, you're in the right place.

It’s Mario Kart in real life over at St. Labre for the St. Labre 200. 

On Friday, July 7, teams are provided materials and have 24 hours to build a go-kart. Then, teams go head-to-head in the races on Saturday, July 8. 

In addition to go-kart making and racing, they will also have a canteen, BMX tracks, a kids' zone and the Dennis Smook-Off, which is a meat-smoking competition. 

We will be there Friday from 4 PM to 6 PM for the build day with Wendy’s Show Us Your Summer! 

Mitchell Fun and Area Days are back at Stahn Field Park and Mitchell Community Centre, and we will be there on Saturday, July 8, from 2 PM to 5 PM. 

Committee Chair Brian Esau says it is the 20th anniversary of celebrating Mitchell and Area Family Fun Days. From car shows and chicken dinners to bingo and barrel rides, they have many activities planned, including a parade.  

“This will be our first-ever parade. It was our committee. We were brainstorming, and all of a sudden, someone says, ‘Why don't we put on a parade?’" Esau explains.  

Esau adds they already have many and a wide variety of entries for the parade, and attendees are also encouraged to bring a canned good for tin for the bin. 

They will also be putting on a show at the new skate park they built last year. 

“Some skateboarders are going to put on a pro skate demo, that will be at 2:00 in the afternoon. But at that area, we're also putting the kids' bouncers and the tennis courts, we're going to have an open run basketball session there,” 

On Sunday, they will have a church service at 10:30 and a barbecue to wrap it all up. 

Over at Buffalo Point, they are having their four-day Buffalo Days celebration. It all starts on Thursday, July 6, with the Buffalo Scavenger Hunt, pick-up basketball games and skill games. 

On Friday, the Battle of the Shores Golf Tournament is happening, and it starts at 1 PM. Saturday is all about Family Fun Day with live entertainment, bouncy castles and fireworks. 

They kick off the final day with a pancake breakfast at 8 AM, followed by the Show n’ Shine car show which starts at 11 AM and is happening at the Marina Grounds. We will be in attendance with Wendy’s Show Us Your Summer!
