Gas prices dropped by two cents in Steinbach this Tuesday and following an announcement from the provincial government, we can expect a much larger decrease in the new year.

At the start of the day on Tuesday most gas stations in Steinbach and the surrounding area had regular gas listed at 152.9 cents per litre. By the end of the day that price had fallen to 150.9 cents per litre which is slightly above the provincial average.

According to GasBuddy, the average price of regular fuel in Manitoba is currently sitting at 149.5 cents per litre.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Red River, prices at the pump are considerably lower. For some reason, stations in the Morden and Winkler area are selling regular gas for anywhere from 136.9 and 141.9 cents per litre.

It wouldn’t be worth the drive out, but if you find yourself in that neck of the woods, it’s probably a good idea to fill up before returning to the Southeast.

Looking ahead to 2024, Manitobans can expect a significant drop in prices. During the Manitoba NDP’s first throne speech Tuesday afternoon, it was announced that our provincial government plans to help those struggling with inflation by reducing the price of fuel.

The Honourable Anita R. Neville, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, announced “At the start of the New Year, our government has a plan to give you a break at the pump. Our government has a plan to pause the provincial gas tax, saving you 14 cents per liter every time you fill up. This will provide relief to families, small businesses and municipalities.”

The net gasoline and motive fuel tax collected in 2022 was $323,117,168. It should be noted that this also included taxes collected from things like railway diesel, commercial heating fuel, and aviation fuel, not just gasoline.
