For many people here in southeastern Manitoba, the recent heatwave has been a little overwhelming. For others, it has offered a throwback to their younger years.

Beth Slusher grew up in the small Caribbean nation of Belize located on the Yucatan Peninsula. She notes it has been hot recently, but not compared to the hot days she experienced growing up.

"We have crazy humidity back home. You would actually feel the humidity, almost like you could cut it with a knife. You would be so drenched in sweat. We would spend most of our days either in the river or the sea."

Slusher notes she has thoroughly enjoyed the heatwave.

"It has been beautiful. Yeah, it has been a little hotter than normal but not enough for me to complain knowing where I grew up and the heat that I have been accustomed too."

Isi Masi is originally from the Pacific island nation of Fiji. He notes he was recently hanging out with some of his Fijian friends in Steinbach and they came to the consensus that this week’s weather has reminded them of home. That said, he notes there are a few differences.

"You know it compares pretty good. Especially these last couple of days. What is different than home, is that I am able to walk into an air-conditioned house, where at home you have to find a coconut tree and hope that the breeze is cool."

Massi says, all in all, he spent a lot of time gardening, biking, and taking in the hot weather this past week.
