The first-ever Winter Frog Follies festival was held in St. Pierre this past Saturday.

The Frog Follies event generally takes place in mid-July, however, Organizer Tammy Gigolyk says they couldn't wait that long, noting “We knew that our community needed something like this.”

ational Centre and many more. Everybody just pulled together.” Gigolyk adds “We were really in awe. From serving 200 people at the free pancake breakfast to a very successful social, it really came together."

Gigolyk says they also had a whole host of kids activities and entertainers at the St. Pierre Recreation Centre, dog sled rides, a cribbage tournament and four-on-four boot hockey.

"We had a wonderful event. The goal of the event was to brighten community spirit and I think we really accomplished that"

As the name would suggest, frogs usually play a big part in any normal July Frog Follies Festival. A staple event is the national frog jumping championship which was founded over 50 years ago. Though there aren’t any frogs this time of year, Gigolyk says they were still able to bring a froggy theme to this wintery festival.

"We had a frog collection, hundreds of frog items from a local resident who has lived in St. Pierre and Otterburne all her life, Aurise McFarlane. She donated her collection for the day and we put it out and it was just amazing. Everything from slippers to old Frog Follies T-shirts, several stuffies, flip-phones, yeah it was something else."

Gigolyk says it was incredibly encouraging to see the community come out and enjoy themselves despite the whole thing being a little short notice. She adds all of the money raised at the community social is going to arena repairs in St. Pierre.
