Three women from the Vita area went out of their way Thursday evening to make sure their firefighters were being taken care of.

Crews have been battling a large brush fire southeast of that community since early Thursday afternoon. Emma Robinson says as the hours passed and the firefighters were still hard at work, she messaged Candice Narth about the potential idea of bringing food to the crew.

(Emma Robinson and Candice Narth)Narth was on board and so they confirmed their idea with the Fire Chief. Moments later they were able to get the local grocery store re-opened in order to buy some bread, meat, chips and Gatorade. The ladies then went to Shirley Wiebe's house and made two loaves worth of sandwiches, enough to feed 15 firefighters.

"They were very grateful for it and they were happy," says Robinson.

She notes they stayed on site about 25 minutes, long enough for the firefighters to refuel and get back on scene. When asked why she did this, Robinson's response, "it's a community thing."

A very close community, notes Robinson.

"All the guys out there, they are putting their time and energy into looking after our community and I think it's just something that just comes natural to most people," she says. "You want to help everybody and if my partner was out there, I would want someone to be looking after them as well."

Robinson says when your friends are out there taking the time to fight fires, it is nice to give back because they have jobs too.

"(We) made a quick decision and followed through with it," she adds.

Robinson says unfortunately these brush fires are happening too frequently.

"We're not sure how the fire actually started," she says. "I hope it was not someone disobeying the burn ban."
