The Eastman Warrior's Rugby team improved their record to 2 and 1 by winning their home opener Thursday evening.

Isi Masi talks about their 26-21 victory over the Assassins.

“Luckily, we scored all our tries in the first half because we didn’t score anything in the second half, so the other team came back strong. We were very fortunate that time was on our side.”

Masi says the warriors played an undisciplined game, and they’ll have to clean up their play for their next game on July 11th against the Wasps.

Warriors and Assassins in a joint group huddle.Warriors and Assassins come together at the end of the game before heading across the park for a BBQ supper.

“There were a lot of whistles blown against us, so penalties, so we have to minimize those, which basically means keeping our tackles low, below the shoulder. If we can execute those, then we can play good rugby.”

Petero Vereakula says rugby is his passion and he loves playing with the Warriors.

There was a good crowd on hand at A.D. Penner Park to take in the game and cheer on the teams.

“It’s amazing to see the fans,” Vereakula says. “Rugby’s a minor sport here in Canada. I'm so grateful that it’s growing. That’s the good thing about rugby here in Steinbach.”
