After two days of stormy weather in southeastern Manitoba, local insurance agencies and plumbers are hard at work.

Orville Giesbrecht is the Co-Owner of Harvest Insurance. He says with the wind and rain that hit Steinbach and the southeast, they weren’t surprised when the phones started ringing off the hook.

"There has been a lot of wind claims as well as a lot of water back-up claims where the sump-pumps in peoples homes aren't able to keep up with the rainwater that is coming in. It is spread out throughout the Southeast but we are seeing a fair bit of claims out in the northeast part of Steinbach."

Giesbrecht says the claims vary significantly but there have already been a few big claims in the $25,000 range.

Meanwhile Chad Brown from Browns Plumbing and Heating says they got more calls then they could handle on Tuesday.

"People either had rainwater or sewage water backed up into their basement mostly caused by either pumps not keeping up, a failed pump, or we had the odd situation where people had a sump pit but maybe their pump hasn’t been working for a year and they didn't realize it and now they paid the price for it."

Brown recommends residents in the southeast take measures to reduce the risk of flooding during similar storms in the future.

"One big thing is to try and divert as much water away from your house as you can. Make sure your eaves troughs are clear and get that water running away from your house and away from your window wells. Aside from that, just make sure that your pumps are working, sump-pumps and sewage pumps if you live outside of city limits, make sure everything is operating as it should."
