Steinbach's Household Hazardous Waste Day has been set for Saturday, June 23rd. Solid Waste Supervisor Eldon Wallman says it will be held at the fire hall. He notes it took longer than usual for the province to set a date this year because the program was moved from one government department to another.

Wallman says there may be less material brought to the event this year because of the recently-opened year round depots for old paint in Steinbach. He explains says there's been a  good response to those old paint drop-off points. "They're getting lots of phone calls, we're getting lots of phone calls and redirecting them towards those outlets and it really alleviates the pressure of Household Hazardous Waste Day for us. That is probably about 80% of what we take in is the used paint." The old paint depots are at Janzen Paint and Decorating, Wiebe's Painting and Penner Building Centre.

Wallman urges residents to bring things like burned out florescent light bulbs, dead batteries, expired propane tanks and pesticides to Household Hazardous Waste Day so they can be properly disposed of. And he adds, "If you're not sure about a substance, don't worry about it., The guys from Miller Environmental are very knowledgeable and they have great noses. They can tell you what it is."
