Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover was unanimous in denying a conditional use application for a large spa.

Nelia and Viktor Holstein had hoped to build a 1,600 square foot facility with an indoor pool, outdoor hot tubs and saunas on their five-acre lot. The lot is located on a rural residential property between Steinbach and Mitchell.

When the Holsteins appeared before Hanover council in mid-May, their proposal was met with opposition from neighbours. Local residents expressed concern with noise as well as all of the dust from extra traffic. The entrepreneurs were expecting about 60 guests daily at the facility.

"Council denied the conditional use," says Reeve Stan Toews. "Not that they are opposed to spas, there is a good place for them but they felt this was not the proper location for a busy spa."

Toews says ideally, this spa would be located next to a golf course or at least in a more rural setting.

Toews notes this sort of application is very unique to Hanover.
