The City of Steinbach is continuing to deal with ice build-up on streets in the vicinity of Mckenzie Avenue, Main Street and Hespeler Street. Randy Reimer, head of Public Works, says he's never seen this before. But, due to several freeze-thaw cycles in recent weeks, culverts are blocked with ice. And then, melting water and rain from this past weekend had nowhere to go but onto the street where it has since become a partly-frozen mess. Eastbound Mckenzie, which had been closed from Harmony Lane to Main Street has re-opened and northbound Hespeler is closed from Main Street To Hanover Street. Reimer says they are using heavy equipment to clean it all up.

"The Hespeler one is a little different problem because that water is still feeding into there. We've closed that because we don't want people going through there and getting stalled. We've closed that (northbound) temporarily until it ices up so we can get that cleaned up as well."

Reimer explains how this situation developed.

"That whole Hespeler drain, with this last warm spell that we had, was just starting to flow really nicely. Then we got that rain Sunday night which sort of broke free some of the water that comes from the south along Hespeler which just started overloading that Hespeler drain. The culverts were starting to run but these big culverts coming through, all the way down Hespeler, now have a big build-up of ice inside them."

Reimer is hoping for a return to milder weather soon so that they can open up the culverts and drains to get the water flowing.
