The City of Steinbach is in the process of updating its Building Bylaw. Mayor Chris Goertzen says the document hasn't been updated since 1977 when the late A.D. Penner was the mayor of Steinbach.

"For a bylaw to last 41 years is quite something. We have gone through this and the administration has changed and tweaked a few words but, by and large, it is intact. It was a good

Steinbach's Building Bylaw, approved in 1977, bears the signature of the late Mayor A.D. Penner. document then and with some slight changes, it's a good document now. Obviously, we have a strong history in our city of doing things well the first time."

Goertzen says there are no major policy changes. Rather the update drops some sections that no longer apply and revises some of the language to make it more current. He notes one thing that will change are the fines for builders who don't follow the code.

"Obviously, we're going to have to adjust those numbers to reflect 2018 and beyond. The dollar figures for 1977 are vastly different than today."

He adds the fines that were put into the bylaw 41 years ago are no longer sufficient to act as a deterrent. For example, the fine per day for building without first obtaining a permit was set at $25 back in 1977. Council has asked the administration for recommendations on what the new fines should be.
