House at 306 Barkman Avenue, purchased by the city.

The City of Steinbach continues to buy up properties along Elmdale Drive. City council has approved spending $154,900.00 to buy the house and yard at 306 Barkman at Elmdale.

Chief Administrative Officer Jack Kehler made the recommendation to council. "This is an ongoing strategic objective of the city to continue buy land south(east) of the T.G. Smith Centre. This particular one is a corner lot, which I feel is strategically important because it's a corner influence and it would give the city more opportunities going forward as to how the rest of the block would be developed. This has been ongoing for approximately 15 years. Our recommendation is the city purchase it," said Kehler.

City councillor Cari Penner moved approval. She says, "This is a long term goal of the city in that the purchase of this property will allow us to pursue the Elmdale Plan, a plan for a walkway and, specifically, for the enjoyment of the public so that we have a nice place for people to walk down Elmdale."

City council sets aside money in its budget each year for such property acquisitions.
