Last Saturday the International Ice Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada announced the cancellation of the 2020 World Women's Hockey Championship scheduled for Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia from March 31st - April 10th due to the ongoing spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

 Five days later, and in a span of less than 24 hours, the following announcements were made.

 NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the suspension of the 2019-2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 The World U18 Hockey Championship in Michigan was cancelled.

 The Western Hockey League season has been suspended.

 The Steinbach Pistons season is on hold. The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced the cancellation of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs, the Anavet Cup and the Centennial Cup Canadian National Junior A Championship slated for Portage this May. CJHL president Brent Ladds says the decision has been made to put a hold on the season for the time being and they will continue to stay abreast of the situation as it evolves. Further updates will be made as they become available.

 The Springfield Xtreme defeated the Lorette Comets 6-3 Thursday night in Oakbank in game one of their best of three final. The status of game two is up in the air as Hockey Manitoba announced that the remainder of the season has been cancelled effective today due to on going concerns regarding the coronavirus. That means the Eastman Selects will not travel to Winnipeg tonight to play the Wild in game three of their Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League semifinal. As well the Carillon Senior Hockey League final between the Ste. Anne Aces and Grunthal Red Wings is on hold and all 10 Provincial Championships that were scheduled for this weekend including the Midget Rural A/B in Steinbach and the Pee Wee Rural A in Beausejour have been cancelled.

 All Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities including national championships have been cancelled until further notice.

 Major League Baseball suspended spring training and delayed the start of the 2020 season by at least two weeks.

 The NBA season will be suspended at least a month

 The CFL announced the cancellation of it's regional and national combines.

 The Australian Grand Prix was cancelled.

 Hideki Matsuyama fired an opening round nine-under par 63 and then the PGA Tour cancelled the final three rounds of the Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

 Major League Soccer has suspended its season for 30 days.

 The 2020 World Women's Curling Championship which was to begin Saturday in Prince George has been cancelled.

 Curling Canada announced the indefinite postponement of the Canadian Senior and Mixed Doubles Championships in Portage.

 The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association cancelled the Provincial Basketball and Hockey Championships. The Provincial Junior Varsity Basketball and Provincial AA Hockey championships began Thursday in Carberry, Teulon, Winnipeg and Rivers. The Provincial AAAA Varsity Basketball Championships and the Provincial AAAA Hockey Championships were to start today in Winnipeg.

 The U Sports Men's Volleyball Championship scheduled for his weekend at the University of Manitoba's Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg has been cancelled.
