This may be the first weekend in October, yet a group from Vita is looking forward to the third weekend in January. That’s when the Vita and Area Winter Festival is going to take place.

Chairperson Lucie Maynard says the committee is holding a fall supper on Sunday to raise money to cover festival expenses. As soon as the supper is done, they will move forward as quickly as they can to plan events for the festival.

She feels the winter festival is worth the time and energy that goes into it.

“Because it breaks up winter,” Maynard explains. “It gives everybody something to do and dog sled races are quite unique in the southeast.”

While the sled races are the big attraction for many people, Maynard says the committee is planning to offer activities for every age group. She is hoping to have some indoor events as well, in case it’s too cold for outdoor activities.

But Maynard is quick to point out that they just don’t know how things will turn out, and they’ll have to be prepared with options.

The fall supper will be drive-thru style on Sunday, October 2nd. The Vita and Area Winter Festival is planned for January 15th and 16th.
