Around 19,000 pounds of food donated to South East Helping Hands this week

Saying it has been a busy week at South East Helping Hands is a bit of an understatement.  

All week long, youth from Steinbach and the surrounding area have been going door to door collecting non-perishable donations for the local foodbank.  

To add to the mix, we also ran our annual Fall Food Drive at the Clearspring Centre from 9AM to 6PM both Thursday and Friday which was very successful.

Kali Loeppky is the Office Manager at South East Helping Hands. She says staff and volunteers have been kept on their toes. 

“With everything we've gotten in, we've just been trying to organize it all and make sure it's ready to go onto the shelves.” 

Despite the added work, the atmosphere at the foodbank has been incredible. Loeppky says it has been encouraging to see all of the donations roll in. 

“It's honestly super amazing. We got quite a lot, so our shelves will hopefully keep us through this winter, helping all of the families that continue to need our services.” She adds “We're very thankful for all the support we're getting just from Steinbach alone, let alone all the towns around us.”

Loeppky says if you add up all of the donations collected by local youth groups, it comes out to around 14,500 pounds. Our Fall Food Drive brought in over 2,000 pounds of food and a further 2,700 pounds was also collected in the community earlier in the week.  

In total, Loeppky says around 19,000 pounds in food donations rolled into their facility this week alone. She says if she is not mistaken, around 14,000 pounds was collected over the same period a year ago, so this has been quite the week.
