A family who moved to Steinbach in 1878 is being honored with their own pocket park.

Head of Parks and Recreation Russ Dyck says the Wilhelm T. Giesbrecht Family immigrated to Steinbach from the Ukraine. Their descendants, who still live in the city, have now sponsored a park to commemorate them.

“We install these parks as families come forward and want to sponsor them,” explains Dyck, “we started building these in 1998 and I think this is the 21st one. We put up approximately one per year.”

This year’s addition will be across from Loewen Windows on Highway 52.

Dyck defines a pocket park as little rest areas with fences, planters, a couple of benches, and a plaque indicating who the park is dedicated to. In this case, Dyck says the Giesbrecht family were farmers who owned a lot of land in the area which is why the specific location was selected.

Dyck expects the small pocket park will be finished by the end of July.
