Walk For Alzheimer's event in Steinbach last May

The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba has announced Steinbach’s annual Walk For Alzheimer’s will not be happening this year.

As the result of COVID-19, Events Manager Allison Woodward says they have been forced to change things up for 2020.

“People with dementia in Manitoba are one of the most vulnerable populations,” explains Woodward. “We still wanted to come together this year and show our support.”

Instead, a virtual event is being planned for this year. Woodward says throughout the month of May, people can participate by doing activities in their home, or at a responsible social distance. An event will then be held over Facebook on Sunday, May 31st.

“(We are) still trying to make sure we get everyone to come together, especially during this time,” she says.
According to Woodward, there are many ways that people can take part during the month. Interested participants can set individual goals, such as how many steps to take in a day. She knows of one team challenging each member to walk 10,000 steps each day in May. Other activities include singing, dancing, telling a joke or sharing a story.

“You can really get as creative as you like,” she says. “But we’re asking people to take short videos or take pictures of what you’re doing and post them to social media.”

On May 31st, the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba will be hosting a live stream, featuring all the different ways people have participated. There will also be a one hour virtual concert with musicians from Manitoba.

Woodward says the Steinbach walk is always a fundraiser, which usually takes place around this time of year. Those wishing to still make a donation this year can visit their website. Woodward says the walk in Steinbach would normally attract between 50 and 100 people.

“It’s a pretty significant walk and really strong community presence in Steinbach,” she says.

Woodward admits it is disappointing to have to make alternate plans this year.

“Everyone’s in the same boat this year,” she says. “It’s disappointing that we can’t come together in person, but this is a really great way for everyone still to show each other what they are doing to support the population with dementia.”
