Steinbach's population has reached almost 16,000 according to numbers from the 2016 Census.

Statistics Canada says Steinbach's population as of last May was 15,829, up by 2,305 people or 17% from 2011.

Mayor Chris Goertzen says the population number is a little smaller than the city had expected.

"We thought it would be right around that 16,000 - 16,200 mark but it's close. We've grown 17% and, in the last decade, we've grown significantly. We've seen a population increase of 5,000 people (since 2006)."

And Goertzen notes, for the first time ever, Steinbach's population is larger than the RM of Hanover.

"It was interesting to look at those numbers. They've had significant growth as well and we want to see them grow. We are slightly larger than Hanover now but, in the end, if they grow, we are successful as well."

Goertzen says the census verifies what the city already knows.

"We continue to see many terrific growth stories and projects in our city. Council continues to focus on setting the stage for growth, such as investing in quality, well-maintained infrastructure. We live in a vibrant city that continues to prosper, develop and attract new people. People want to live here and be part of Steinbach’s future."

Meanwhile, Niverville's population is 4,610, up 30% from 2011 while the town of Ste. Anne is at 2,114 people, also up 30%.

The population of Hanover is now 15,733, up 12.2%, surpassing Springfield as the largest municipality in Manitoba.

The RM of La Broquerie is at 6,076 up 16.0%.

The RM of Ste. Anne is up to 5,003, up 6.8%.

The RM of Tache is at 11,568, up 12.5%.

The RM of Ritchot is 6,679, up 21.9%.
