The former owner of a Steinbach restaurant has pleaded guilty to tax evasion.

59-year-old Tak Yuen Sung, also known as Tom Sung of Steinbach has been sentenced in Winnipeg Provincial Court to a court-imposed fine of $73,568.48 for evading the payment of $53,265.21. This represents 138 per cent of the federal income tax evaded. Sung will also have to pay the full amount of tax owning, plus related interest and any penalties assessed by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

A CRA investigation of the 2010 to 2013 tax years revealed that while managing Lee's Village Restaurant in Steinbach, Sung used two point of sale terminals but only provided his accountant with sales information and related bank statements for the transactions from one of the terminals. From the unreported sales, the investigation discovered deposits, classified as wages, to Sung totalling $271,000. These deposits into Sung's personal bank account were not consistent with the income he reported on his personal tax filings.
