Council for the Rural Municipality of Ritchot is looking for ways to reduce speeding infractions.

Mayor Chris Ewen says based on information from St. Pierre RCMP, it appears that less property crime is now happening in Ritchot but more traffic violations. He says that is something they need to take very seriously. Ewen notes this becomes a safety concern for children crossing busy streets on their walk to school.

According to Ewen, the municipality owns an electronic speed reader board. But he says their hands are tied on where these boards can be placed.

"We have asked the province if we can move it to certain locations," notes Ewen. "Unfortunately because most of our provincial roads are main streets, it's tough to get that approval, but there are opportunities that our CAO is working with them on."

Ewen says their CAO has also asked RCMP if photo radar could be enforced outside the city of Winnipeg. RCMP have indicated that within Manitoba only the city of Winnipeg is authorized to use photo enforcement under the Image Capturing Enforcement Regulation. Any jurisdiction wishing to use photo enforcement must be authorized by government and at this point, RCMP has not requested the capability.
