Free speed skating demonstrations and lessons took place at the T.G. Smith arena from 1:30 – 4:30 pm Sunday afternoon in Steinbach.

Randy Plett grew up in Steinbach, and has competed at the masters level of speed skating in Canada and around the world.

He says he has been interested in bringing speed skating to Steinbach for about 10 years now, and when he was approached by the Eastman Club, he said it would be a great idea because we have a large population base very close to Steinbach.

Plett says, “Today was an introduction to speed skating, so kids could come by and see what speed skating was all about.” He would like to start a speed skating club in Steinbach in September, and hopes to hold another introduction to speed skating at that time.

Plett says he got involved in speed skating because, “a big thing for me is the fitness part, and it's a very technical sport as well. It's just a lot of fun to get together with a group and see how fast you can go around the ice.”

As far as attendance for the event, Plett says, last week they had only 15 registrants, and today they had 35 register.

Plett says speed skating is different than hockey skating because the skates have longer flatter blades. “But speeds are quite incredible. In arenas, World Cup guys in short track are doing 45 km/h on the ice.”

Skaters were able to try the skates, watch demonstrations, try skills and mock races. Plett says, “We are always learning and improving, and it's a lot of fun coaching the kids.” He adds, the skates were provided by Speed Skating Manitoba.
