Six RM’s across the southeast have begun meeting to try and regain funding that was promised and removed by Manitoba Hydro.

La Broquerie Reeve Lewis Weiss says his RM, alongside Ste Anne, Tache, Springfield, Piney, and Stuartburn, were promised a collective $4.2 million from Manitoba Hydro as compensation for the work on the Manitoba to Minnesota Transmission Project occurring in their respective regions.

Weiss indicates that this group of municipalities first met on April 17 where they determined how to best move ahead.

“Every municipality has now put one member forward,” explains Weiss. “We all chose a secretary of the committee to take care of the writing, the phoning, and the appointments. We are also going to try and work with the province of Manitoba to get this funding reinstated.”

Considering the years of wear and tear the project’s construction will have on main roads, back roads, and ditches, La Broquerie, and their fellow councils, felt some kind of repayment would only make sense.

“We’re the ones maintaining the roads so it would be good to get the compensation that was promised because we are going to have to be dealing with this for a long time.”

Weiss says the affected municipalities are not planning on compromising on the issue either and is hoping to gain back every last bit of the $4.2 million.
