Canada Post is asking for more community mailboxes in the Rural Municipality of Ste Anne.

“They’ve been going in that direction for quite some time now,” says Reeve Paul Saindon. “They have increased their community mailboxes to eliminate those little roadside personal boxes.”

Saindon suggests online shopping, social distancing, and crowded post offices as reasons Canada Post is petitioning for the change.

“I think it’s starting already. I believe right now when a home is sold, and if it had its own individual mailbox on the road, that does not continue with the new owner,” explains Saindon. “So, they are being eliminated already.”

Saindon suggests it may just be a matter of time before the switch is made as surrounding municipalities have already adopted the new system.

“There have been some surrounding us that have worked through it,” says Saindon of the neighbouring municipalities, “and we’re just going to have to follow suit.”

Offering up a potential benefit Saindon mentions the mailboxes will be accessible by car.

“It’s just something that they’re doing and we’re trying to keep up with it,” says the Reeve, “and not have it as a shock.”
