Manitoba Water Stewardship is working hard to better understand the Sandilands aquifer. The Pembina Valley Water Co-op has been spearheading a proposal to pipe water from the aquifer into the Red River Valley.  However, that attempt was halted earlier this year when the Clean Environment Commission ruled that more information about the nature of the aquifer was needed before such a project could go ahead.  Water Stewardship spokesman Steve Topping says a ground water assessment study is now underway to better understand the aquifer and its sustainability.  Topping says the information will be used to develop an aquifer management plant, which will aid the Province when administering  licenses for projects like the proposed Sandilands pipeline project.  Officials with the Water Co-op say they are still interested in the Sandilands as an alternate water source and are awaiting the completion of the assessment study on the aquifer.
