The Town of Niverville has joined the Rural Municipality of Tache in lobbying for the elimination of single-use plastic bags in Manitoba.

Niverville Mayor Myron DyckNiverville Mayor Myron Dyck says this all started at a meeting of the Winnipeg Capital Region which is made up of all the municipalities immediately surrounding Winnipeg. He notes they were split into groups to discuss ways to lighten the load on landfills.

"Waste reduction is something that is really being discussed. From that, our recommendation was that we go to our AMM (Association of Manitoba Municipalities) convention and we ask our AMM board to lobby the province for the elimination of single-use plastics. With the research that is being done, with the information that we have, we believe that they no longer are necessary, that there are other alternatives that could be used instead of them."

Dyck says the R.M. of Tache has put forward a motion and Niverville Town Council has voted to support Tache. He notes the next step is to bring this motion to the Association of Manitoba Municipalities Eastern District Meeting and ask for their support.

"If we receive support there then the resolution moves forward to our provincial conference and at the provincial conference we will ask for the support of all municipalities and if it carries there, then the AMM board has the mandate to go to the province with this request."
