Around 60 motorcycles roared into Steinbach on Saturday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin and raise money for Diabetes Canada.

The Sikh Motorcycle Club of Canada hosted rides in various cities across the country raising $113,000 for the cause, exceeding the goal of $100,000. The Manitoba ride started in Winnipeg and finished in Steinbach, raising approximately $17,000.

Kelly Lambkin with Diabetes Canada says the money will be put to good use.

“The funds raised go to support our D-camps program, programs and services and advocacy efforts in the community,” she says. “It’s absolutely critical to what we do.”

While the discovery of insulin has significantly improved the lives of many people with diabetes, Lambkin says it’s not the finish line because it’s not a cure. Insulin can help manage the disease, but she points out there are still devastating results from diabetes.

“It’s a contributing factor to 40 percent of heart attacks, 30 percent of strokes, it’s the leading cause of blindness, also in lower leg amputations that are non-traumatic. And so, it’s significant, it impacts our community significantly.”
