Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says they were called to a structure fire on Highway 52 just west of Lilac Street at 8:52 P.M and crews from Kleefeld and Blumenort attended.

"When we got on scene, we had a fire in the house which was advancing. It started in the garage area, we don't know for sure yet if it is in the garage exactly, but in that area and it spread to the rest of the house. We also called in a water tanker from Steinbach for additional water supply so our crews brought it under control within an hour. Around midnight we released most of the crew."

Wiebe says they kept a small skeleton crew at the house overnight to take care of any hot-spots that may flare up. He notes the owners of the home had left for the evening so fortunately no one was in the house at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

Though the house is still standing, Wiebe says the damage was significant.

"I don't have an exact number yet, we are still in contact with the insurance adjusters to get a number. It is likely to be a complete loss. They were able to salvage a lot of contents from the house so that is great, but right now it looks like the house will be a complete loss."

Wiebe says the Office of the Fire Commissioner was called in to find the cause of the fire and an investigator arrived Sunday morning. He hopes they will know what started the fire shortly.

The fire is currently believed to have started in the garage area
