It appears that Lorette residents are intent on making their community a safer place.

After noticing a rise in local petty crime, Lorette Collegiate Teacher Lori Gauthier began deliberating on how she could reintroduce a Citizens On Patrol Program to the region. The once-active program fizzled out 15 odd years ago due to faltering commitment. That commitment, it seems, has returned.

Gauthier held a preliminary COPP meeting in her school’s library on Tuesday and was surprised by the outpouring of support.

“It was wonderful! We had about 30 people in attendance and all of them signed on as volunteers and have recruited more people on top of that.”

For those who do not know what exactly COPP is, Gauthier provides a brief explanation.

“It’s a group of organized people who volunteer as little time or as much time as they would like to keep our community safer by being visible and keeping watch on our town.” In many ways, Gauthier says the initiative is an extension of the police force.

During the coming months, each COPP member will get a criminal record check as well as some training. Volunteers will also receive specially marked equipment, indicating their new role.

Two RCMP officers are assisting Gauthier as she continues facilitating the program. Both have expressed their appreciation of the resurrected initiative and look forward to beginning an official partnership with this new chapter of volunteers.

Gauthier encourages further participation and says any other interested individuals can email coppcordinatorlorette@gmail.com for more information.
