The Kleefeld Recreation Association will be receiving more than $100,000 from an insurance settlement through the Rural Municipality of Hanover.

Last week we broke the story that Hanover had settled an insurance claim for $112,029 for losses and expenses as a result of the forensic audit of the former Kleefeld Recreation Association (KRA). Ten per cent of that total will go to Hanover to cover its share of the auditing costs and the Finance Committee had recommended an additional five per cent go to Hanover to cover administration expenses throughout the audit.

But Kleefeld area Councillor Darrin Warkentin asked Council to reconsider giving that additional five per cent to Hanover. He suggested the only thing worse than getting your money stolen once, is getting it stolen twice.

"I thought the fifteen per cent was rather excessive and I felt that we could drop that," says Warkentin. "I felt that would be better served in the pockets of the Kleefeld residents as far as the KRA that we could use for projects."

Councillor Bernie Stahn quickly sided with Warkentin, noting Council wants this to end on a positive note. Hanover Council agreed to cap the refund at ten per cent to the municipality.

Warkentin says the more than $100,000 will allow the Association to tackle some projects that benefit young families at the park.

"We're finding that there's things that we want to do for young families, play structures, playground equipment, that kind of thing," says Warkentin. "It's really good to get that into our hands so that now we can address those projects that we're looking at doing."
