Last week we told the story of a former Steinbach resident who had been informed her citizenship was no longer valid. Anneliese Demos says she received an email on Friday informing her the application she sent in was approved.

Demos says the next step will be to take her oath of citizenship to have her citizenship confirmed. She adds she's glad the processed has moved quickly to date and she's getting her citizenship, however, she adds she's not 100% happy because her citizenship will not be retroactive, it will be as of the day she takes her oath.

"They won't put it back to 1981 when I got my original one, 1994 when I got my second one, even five years ago when they screwed up and sent me the wrong application. They won't retroactive any of it, whic his not really fair because in 2009 when they changed the law again, they did retroactive it for a lot of people who lost it, but not everyone and that's not right."

"They tried contacting me, I'm sorry, I myself never got any contact information. They could easily have checked my tax returns all these years for my address, I don't move around a lot. My phone number has been the same for almost 20 years. So, there's no way they couldn't have gotten a hold of me."

She adds she hopes she doesn't have to wait long to take her oath of citizenship after seeing her sister wait three years to have her citizenship process finalized. Demos adds, due to legal matters, her brother in Steinbach is still working to have his citizenship confirmed as well.

Demos says she's glad this is almost over and hopes to never have a citizenship issue again.

She adds a lot of second generation individuals, especially those of Mennonite background need to be careful and double check their citizenship to make sure it's valid.
